Awareness of hand-arm vibration (HAV) & whole-body vibration (WBV) has significantly increased in recent times with epidemiological studies linking prolonged exposures with various health disorders.
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations came into force in 2005. The regulations apply to the exposure in the workplace for hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibration.
Hand-arm vibration is caused by the use of hand held or hand guided vibrating tools, or holding the work-piece to a grinding wheel/belt.
Typical symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) include:
Hand-arm vibration syndrome is now regularly reported disease under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurences Regulations).
Whole-body vibration is caused by vibration transmitted through the seat or feet by workplace machines and vehicles.

The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations (2005) can be viewed HERE.
Regular, long term exposure to high levels of WBV has been linked to the onset of back pain and problems with posture.
IEC offers the specialist measurement and evaluation services in order to ensure transmitted vibration to employees is controlled.
